What software do you need to install to use a headset on windows xp?

I've bought two decent Phillips headsets and neither have worked. A friend said it's because if you have Windows XP, there's this software you have to install. Does anybody know what this software is?What software do you need to install to use a headset on windows xp?
Your friend hasn't got a clue what he's talking about so ignore him.

If the Sound is working correctly you don't need any extra software.

Any headset I have used on any OS all I have done is plug them in.

Got the jacks plugged in the right sockets?

Have you done a hardware test with them plugged it?

Its called a driver. Just do a google search typing in the model of the headset and driver

e.g 'phillips xxxx driver'

If you don't find it that way go to the main phillips website, and one will be there somewhere...You basically want a driver for whatever model it is for windows XP..You should really have got discs with these headsets containing what you need...perhaps you have? What software do you need to install to use a headset on windows xp?
download realtek hd audio codecs.

Then configure ''mic boost''

Either it comes with a CD or your not plugging them in correctly. I've never had to install anything BTW
