How is software actually designed and built?
I am curious as to how software is actually designed and built in the real world, as in the domain of software engineering. I can understand the programming languages themselves, it just seems that I cannot understand how they can be made into a software system for use in an embedded device or on a PC. Is there any automation to the software design process? What tools are actually used to develop software?
I've also heard that code for a lot of different tasks is placed in libraries, and this code can be referenced when the code you are coding is being built and incorporated in the final product. How do you find which libraries and code that you need?
I also wanted to ask if the graphical user interface code is kept separate from the actual program code, and the GUI is an "interface" to the program. Can GUI libraries be used?How is software actually designed and built?

When a group of people develop software together, they use a Version Control system, like CVS, Subversion, etc. This allows people to make changes and have the version control software merge the changes together.
Then, they write a script to take the latest code out of the Version Control system and compile it all. This is called "the build". It builds a copy of the program that you can send to testers.
Testers usually use testing software that will run "test cases". A test case runs your program, send input and makes sure the output is what you expected. Testers also make new test cases: they enter the input to send and the results they expect from your program. There are also testing programs that can use a GUI : they tell the OS to act as if a button was clicked, or as if text were typed, etc.
When the program has been tested and you want to sell it to customers (because we all like making money), you can make an installer for it. Software from companies like InstallShield is popular for doing this. The installer contains a copy of your program, and knows how to copy all of the files onto the computer. You can burn the installer onto a CD and send it to people. Or put it in a ZIP file and put it on your web site for download.
Code in any language can be made into a library, where you provide documentation on the functions that can be called (or the objects that can be used) in the library. To learn about using libraries, just find some for the language you like best and try them out. If you like Python, try downloading some new module from someone and follow their documentation's steps for installing and using it.

If you really want a good brochure layout/design, I suggest you try Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. These two works hand-in-hand in making a good design.

My advice- try to find something you enjoy that pays reasonably well because once hard schedules are put into the mix- even the most enjoyable tasks can lose their appeal. They call it /work/ for a reason.
I recently retired after working 30 years in information technology jobs. I think the statement that they are "low stressed' is wrong.
As a design team leader, I interviewed people asking what they wanted. Then I wrote down what they said, they reviewed what I had written, it was revised, and then they gave me the authorization to start developing it.
But every time it was developed - something would be missing. And it was never their fault - it was always that the software engineering team had left something out. But they had never requested it. We were expected to work for free to add in what they had forgotten to ask for.
And all to often, I was told by the client that they only had $$ money and my team should be able to do the work for that much money and within the amount of time specified by the customer. My manager would say if I did not take the deal, then there was no need for me or my team and we could all clean out our desks.
And if I took the deal, my staff would say I was crazy taking on so much work for so little money and such a small time frame.
Still - if you don't have to manage the contract - it not too bad. But you should expect to donate free hours to get the job done.

My advice- try to find something you enjoy that pays reasonably well because once hard schedules are put into the mix- even the most enjoyable tasks can lose their appeal. They call it /work/ for a reason.
I recently retired after working 30 years in information technology jobs. I think the statement that they are "low stressed' is wrong.
As a design team leader, I interviewed people asking what they wanted. Then I wrote down what they said, they reviewed what I had written, it was revised, and then they gave me the authorization to start developing it.
But every time it was developed - something would be missing. And it was never their fault - it was always that the software engineering team had left something out. But they had never requested it. We were expected to work for free to add in what they had forgotten to ask for.
And all to often, I was told by the client that they only had $$ money and my team should be able to do the work for that much money and within the amount of time specified by the customer. My manager would say if I did not take the deal, then there was no need for me or my team and we could all clean out our desks.
And if I took the deal, my staff would say I was crazy taking on so much work for so little money and such a small time frame.
Still - if you don't have to manage the contract - it not too bad. But you should expect to donate free hours to get the job done.

My parents are concerned about my younger sibling's use of the computer. They spend way too much time playing games. Are there any software available that allows passwords on software before opening the programs?

I'm not sure what kind of software you run but you'll definitely need a keyboard midi controller which is just a device that runs with your software so that you can create notes more easier by using the keyboard and the effects that are in your software. You can get some that have drum pads on them also and assignable knobs to make easier access to your effects that you use in your program all in one controller. I use the software ableton which is absolutely great for creating house and electro music along with tons of different genres. I use an Akai APC40 that runs with ableton and the Akai MPK25 midi controller which is a great midi controller. If you're interested you should definitely try out the 30 day free trial of ableton by downloading it from their website. It is very fun to use and also very easy once you get the hang of it and it also has the power behind it to produce very high quality songs. Many house and electro producers run ableton because it is a great software and also is perfect for using with live performances.

I have a Radeon HD 6670 which is capable of handling DX11. But when I switch on DX11 in Arkham City, Windows 7 tell me that the game stopped working. I am also told that it failed to load some shader file. So I have no option but to play the game on good 'ol DX9. I also do not remember in staling DX11 during the game installation, only DX11. I have 4 GB RAM and an Asus P5GC-MX/1333 motherboard. This is the first time I am ever trying to use DX11 I just bought this video card. I want to try out DX11 heard it's got very good graphics card. Or You may try this Video Editor for Mac, it can help you edit, join, split, trim, rotate, crop, convert and cut video, my friends recommend it to me, it's easy to use and works pretty well on my macbook pro. It also build-in many special video effects. I had made a video with it and the video got award, Strongly recommend. I have a dell inspiron and i am looking to get really good antivirus software. I currently use the microsoft one and i don't seem to have any problems at the moment but I feel that it's not reliable. Hi, I make tech videos like iPod videos and I started making tech videos. I was wondering what the best and cheapest software I could use just to do simple well.... a littttlllee advanced. I want something that will support any well most videos formats like MP4 and .MTS. I am sick of downloading all these free programs that dont support certain formats. Then I have to find another program to convert the file and sometimes the file is too big then I have to split the file......Its a really big time waster and I really need something easy to use.
