WinAVI all in one converter is a very good program that i have converted DVD formats to mpeg formats, it does most of the files you can think of.

It's a bit of a steep price, But im pretty sure you can get cheaper or even free software via Google.

I usually use iMovie to edit my videos on Mac, easy to use. Final Cut Express is also good. Final Cut Pro is too complex and expensive.
