I am interested in what the benefits of open software model are to original software writers (not users). I more or less understand the concept from users standpoint (they can modify it, just like Linux, etc.) What I would like to know is what would a developer gain by releasing his software into community. He cannot charge for it anymore, even if he still holds IP rights like patents. Charging for support, not licenses? Quick market penetration? What else? Also Open Source programs are often tickets to big money jobs at companies like Google or, in the case of the Mach kernel writer (Mach kernel being the one that runs Mac OS X GNU Hurd and GNU Darwin) a job at Microsoft. Miguel de Icaza was actually hired by Microsoft, but US Immigration said "You can't have him because he never went to college" so he co-wrote the GNOME desktop and now he works for Novell.

You can give your software for free to individuals, but can charge money to professional users. Many open source software writer writes programs for fun, as they are already working in some IT company. So they are not interested in money. Like google you can get traffic, by availing the free software from your website. More traffic means more advertising. I stole this idea from google. Or else you can publish trial version for free, but can charge money for pro version.
In the end I also don't know what are the true benefits, so plz ask others and thnx for 2 points. :)

What laptop or software takes notes directly from the lecturing teacher in a back to school commercial?
I guess that the laptop is using some type of speech recognition software to translate what the teacher is saying directly to text. I feel like it might have been a Best Buy or Target ad, but I'm not sure and would be open to hearing if others used hardware/software that enable this. Everyone has their own favorite Linux Distro (except I like to be spoiled and will gladly tell you what is wrong with whichever one I am using most at the moment). Some distros read NTFS. Some don't. My first link tells you how to mount a vfat file system onto Red Hat Linux 9.0. That's an older distro, though I have it around here somewhere. The information is still applicable to most distros, and still relevant. What you do is you make a directory you can mount it to, and mount it. To mount it automatically, you edit your /etc/fstab configuration file (CAREFULLY AND BACK IT UP FIRST -- period) by adding a line which tells the computer to read it and what the file format is. I'll let you read it.
The second link, for Ubuntu, is more elaborate but even better. It tells you how to find out what your partition is called by the operating system and what its file format is (with fdisk -l which is not Ubuntu-specific) and how to mount it (assuming you have already created the directory you are mounting it to). Used to be, drives were mounted to the /mnt directory. These days, they are mounted to the /media directory, unless you specify otherwise. On my old Dual Boot I specified the windows partition be mounted to my root directory (/). You can put it in /home/%26lt;username%26gt; if you want (though it may cause a few problems with permissions). It's pretty straightforward and you don't have to edit /etc/fstab unless you want the system to mount it for you automatically at boot.

Try Sony Vegas, I watch gaming videos and they do amazing editing like things you can't even do in the game and Sony Vegas is use to achieve that. What is the difference between software development and software engineering?
Software development and software engineering, Also i was wondering what other profession pays just as well, Can anyone tell me more about internet security, like a profession like anti-hacker.What is the difference between software development and software engineering?

How is software actually designed and built?
I am curious as to how software is actually designed and built in the real world, as in the domain of software engineering. I can understand the programming languages themselves, it just seems that I cannot understand how they can be made into a software system for use in an embedded device or on a PC. Is there any automation to the software design process? What tools are actually used to develop software?
I've also heard that code for a lot of different tasks is placed in libraries, and this code can be referenced when the code you are coding is being built and incorporated in the final product. How do you find which libraries and code that you need?
I also wanted to ask if the graphical user interface code is kept separate from the actual program code, and the GUI is an "interface" to the program. Can GUI libraries be used?How is software actually designed and built?

When a group of people develop software together, they use a Version Control system, like CVS, Subversion, etc. This allows people to make changes and have the version control software merge the changes together.
Then, they write a script to take the latest code out of the Version Control system and compile it all. This is called "the build". It builds a copy of the program that you can send to testers.
Testers usually use testing software that will run "test cases". A test case runs your program, send input and makes sure the output is what you expected. Testers also make new test cases: they enter the input to send and the results they expect from your program. There are also testing programs that can use a GUI : they tell the OS to act as if a button was clicked, or as if text were typed, etc.
When the program has been tested and you want to sell it to customers (because we all like making money), you can make an installer for it. Software from companies like InstallShield is popular for doing this. The installer contains a copy of your program, and knows how to copy all of the files onto the computer. You can burn the installer onto a CD and send it to people. Or put it in a ZIP file and put it on your web site for download.
Code in any language can be made into a library, where you provide documentation on the functions that can be called (or the objects that can be used) in the library. To learn about using libraries, just find some for the language you like best and try them out. If you like Python, try downloading some new module from someone and follow their documentation's steps for installing and using it.

2) Customers report a bug.
3) New stuff you think of that would be cool to add.
